Press Conference: Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of July 2019 on the programme of work of the Security Council in July.

The President of the Security Council for the month of July, Gustavo Meza Cuadra of Peru, today (1 Jul) welcomed the meeting between United Stated President Donald Trump and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un on Sunday at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

Meza Cuadra said, “we consider it, personally and I think all the members, a positive development. And as you know in the past year this was a very important issue. We had several meetings, and we consider that dialogue is the best way to address this difficult issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

Asked about sanctions on the DPRK, the Peruvian Ambassador said, “we always ask that these humanitarian exceptions be respected. We are very much concerned that civil society, civil population suffer from this, particularly when there is scarce food and medicine.”

Turning to Venezuela, he said it was “an international problem. It’s not an internal problem” because of the migrant issue “but also for the risks for the whole region in tension in the region, because of the human rights violations.”

He said, “at the Council there are different positions. It’s difficult when you have a Council that is divided in a specific issue. That’s the reason, as I mentioned, sometimes it’s important for these issues to be discussed at the regional level. And it has been discussed in the past weeks and the past days at the regional level.”
